Every July, Lake Placid transforms. The village that hosted two Winter Olympics fills with athletes, families, and supporters for one of the longest-running Ironman races in North America — a 2.4-mile swim in Mirror Lake, a bike course through the High Peaks, and a marathon that finishes at the Olympic Speedskating Oval. If you’re planning to race (or crew for someone who is) in 2027, here’s the thing veterans already know: lodging near the village books up far in advance — many athletes lock in their housing for the following year almost as soon as this year’s race ends.
Why where you stay matters on race week
Race morning starts before dawn, and everything centers on Mirror Lake and Main Street: the swim start, transition, athlete check-in, and the finish line are all in the heart of the village. Staying close means less time in race-week traffic and shuttle lines, and more time off your feet. It also means your family can walk to the course to cheer instead of managing parking at every checkpoint.
A race house for the whole crew
The Adirondack House is a 6-bedroom, 5-bath Colonial-style home in Lake Placid that sleeps 14 — which for race week means your training partners, your family, and your support crew under one roof instead of scattered across hotel rooms. It’s a short stroll to the shops and restaurants on Main Street and a few minutes from Mirror Lake, where you’ll want to get in your practice swims in the days before the race.
The details that matter most to athletes: a large, fully equipped kitchen for dialing in race-week nutrition on your own schedule; a big dining table where the whole group actually fits; plenty of parking; a mudroom for gear; and a basement game room with ping pong and darts for keeping restless kids (and taper-crazy athletes) occupied. One recent guest put it simply: “Great yard and plenty of parking… Great big table for everyone to sit at… Couldn’t ask for anything more.”
Make it a training weekend first
Many athletes come up earlier in the year to ride the bike course and swim Mirror Lake. The house works just as well for a spring training camp as for race week — and staying here in May or June means you’ll know exactly how race weekend will flow.
